La Taverne Storehouse

The La Taverne Storehouse project was launched in the spring of 2021 through the partnerships with local craft brewers with the idea of developing Fortress of Louisbourg-inspired products, as well as the idea to use an otherwise underutilized venue to its fullest potential.

Offering an immersive venue for casual drinks and live music during the day and a new way to innovate and expand upon our evening events, La Taverne Storehouse is an exciting addition to the Fortress Louisbourg Association’s footprint. It is located in the Bigot Storehouse that in 1744 was under the operation of François Bigot. He established his reputation by being able and devoted service as Île Royale’s commissaire-ordonnateur from 1739 to 1745, while his sharp investments simultaneously laid the foundation of his wealth. Duly promoted, he went on to both fortune and disgrace as the last Intendant of New France.

The inclusion of partnered products in this project connects directly to our mission of striving to foster a better appreciation of Canada and the history and culture of the Fortress of Louisbourg through tangible sensory experiences. Each product draws inspiration from and facilitates the telling of different stories related to the Fortress of Louisbourg.

Our partnered products are featured below along with information about the local craft breweries. To learn more about the stories of these products and their connection to our historic site, be sure to follow the links to view our interpretive videos.

Louisbourg Seafoods

It’s fun to see where dinner starts!

See daily catches of lobster and crab being offloaded at the Louisbourg waterfront and then, dine in one of the local restaurants understanding just how your culinary treat came to your table. Each day (around noon to 2 p.m.) lobster boats return to the harbour after a morning of fishing the rocky Louisbourg shores. From the lighthouse, the Lighthouse Trail or Simon Point , you may even get a chance to watch the boats haul their traps close to shore between daylight and noon.

Crab boats fishing further offshore (8 to 80 miles from port) land their catches at various times throughout the day.

There are no designated viewing locations for observing the landings but there are numerous private wharves and one public wharf where workers and fishermen are happy to tell you about the fishery and provide unique picture-taking opportunities.

Please remember that you enter any of these wharf areas at your own risk so always exercise caution and courtesy.

The Bothy at North Star

Dining*

North Star* has 2 fully licensed restaurants: Coast and The Bothy, both of which are open to residents and non residents alike. The former serves traditional breakfasts and light snacks, each day, from 7.30am until 10.30am, and lunch from 12 noon until 2:30pm. Brunch is served on Saturdays and Sundays until 2.30pm. Dinner is served in The Bothy 7 days a week, from 5.30pm, with last orders taken at 9pm with live music at the weekends.

Coast

Enjoy casual daytime dining, in a brightly attired room, with décor that derives inspiration from the ocean’s gentle colour palette.  Sea foam toned bead board, gnarled drift wood, softly upholstered benches and farmhouse chairs set a relaxing mood to enjoy breakfast, lunch and weekend brunch. Early morning dining spans bagels, porridge and full breakfasts, whilst a tempting lunch offering includes creamy lobster rolls, hearty seafood chowder, burgers, tacos, salads and more.

The Bothy

The Bothy (which means ‘shelter’ in Scottish parlance) resides in an enormous steel framed barn. Lined with rough-hewn spruce logs, the arched building has a cavernous jet toned ceiling, and a huge window elevation designed to resemble a British railway station from the Victorian era.

But of course the real star of the show is an exactingly prepared menu, that takes its cues from Maritime and French influences. A mixture of locally harvested seafood, vegetables and greens conspire an exciting food offering. From fresh lobster dishes to moist halibut, and from Boeuf Bourguignon, to Bangers and Mash (a Scottish staple) the menu also includes vegetarian and vegan options, and what many have said is the province’s best chowder.

The venue hosts live entertainment (midweek and on Friday and Saturday evenings) with a mix of singers, songwriters and musicians playing folk, contemporary and traditional music.

Spirit

Spirit, the North Star* bar (set within The Bothy) serves cocktails, fine wines, spirits, a concise library of Scottish and Japanese whiskies and a selection of Irish whiskey. Gather at the bar, or settle on a leather sofa ahead of (or after) dinner. Or simply visit for a bottle of red wine and a delicious charcuterie board…
